Melissa Thorne, RDH
Lead Dental Hygienist
I truly love getting to know my patients as individuals and watching their families grow. These relationships are what make my days fun and keep my passion for this profession strong. I strive to make everyone feel comfortable in a place where many people feel uncomfortable. I started working with Dr. Sepi as a Dental Assistant in 1996. In 2001 I completed my Dental Hygiene degree and returned to Isles Dental. I intend to stay here until I retire.
My role at Isles Dental is multi-faceted. I am the Lead Dental Hygienist in the practice, and I also support my other team members when needed. We’re all willing to pitch in to keep everything running smoothly for our patients. As a hygienist, I focus on helping people develop and keep a healthy mouth and smile. While I’m cleaning their teeth, we talk about their home hygiene routine and figure out changes they can make that will keep their smile looking great.
I live in Minneapolis with my husband Matt, daughter Sophia, and our dog, Ruby. Outside of work, I’m all about friends and family.

I love meeting our patients. When I started working here, in 2013 as a fill-in for Missy during the holidays, they were all new to me. Now, though, I feel I am becoming part of their family. It’s fun to hear what people are up to with work, school, and their pastimes. I’m always learning something new from our patients, and that keeps my work fresh and interesting.
As a hygienist, I help patients improve their oral and overall health, and develop a great smile. I clean teeth, perform scaling, polishing, and periodontal therapy, and take X-rays. A lot of my time is spent educating patients about the importance of good home care processes and products. Education and learning is important to me, and I love to share what I know! I graduated from Argosy University in 2010 and began my practice as a hygienist. I went back to pursue my Bachelor's Degree in Dental Hygiene and graduated with honors in the Spring of 2016 from Metropolitain State University.
I grew up in Minneapolis and love being part of my community. It’s fun talking with patients about new hot-spots around the cities, whether that’s a new restaurant or weekend events. I love to cook, am learning to garden, and in the winter I still try my best to get outside and enjoy whatever weather we may be having. I love the State Fair, swimming in our many wonderful lakes, wearing flannel, and biking around the city. I’m a typical Minneapolitain!

Licensed Dental Assistant with Restorative Functions
I became part of the family at Isles Dental in the Summer of 2017. You will see me helping Dr. Sepi with various operatory procedures, and keeping patients comfortable and happy while they're visiting us. I love the variety in my position as a dental assistant, as it offers me the opportunity to be endlessly excited about my job. I also have the chance to meet new patients on a regular basis, eventually establishing a close relationship with them. I thoroughly enjoy working with Dr. Sepi and my teammates at Isles Dental because everyone is so caring, compassionate, understanding, and easy-going. We all love to learn and share what we know. I value the positive, relaxed atmosphere we are able to create that allows everyone to be comfortable in a sometimes less-than-comfortable setting.
I have been a dental assistant since the Fall of 2012 after completing two full-time internships at the VA Minneapolis and a local non-profit dental clinic. I graduated from St. Cloud Technical & Community College with both an A.A.S. in Dental Assisting and an Associate of Arts degree. I furthered my education in the dental field through courses at MSU in Oral Anatomy, Head and Neck Anatomy & Histology, and Pharmacology. I received my Restorative Functions Certification in the Spring of 2017. Education is very important to me and I love to share what I know with my patients; it helps calm tense nerves.
When I'm not at work, and weather permits, I love to be outside. I appreciate our biking and hiking trails, tennis, swimming, and anything in nature, especially if I can do it with Kuma, my fur baby that I adopted from the humane society in 2014. When the Minnesota weather changes, I like to spend time reading, visiting with friends and family, and traveling.
I joined Isles Dental in August 2017, and have over 30 years of experience in dental offices. I was fascinated with the dental field after my experience with orthodontics and braces as a teenager. In college, I started with an accounting degree, then became a dental assistant. A few short years later, after starting a family, I combined my background and pursued my career of dental office administrator. I have experience in many office settings, but a small private practice is my favorite because I get to know and build relationships with my team and with our patients.
As office administrator, I wear many hats. I do a lot of “behind the scenes” work, and I help patients schedule appointments, learn about insurance, or discuss treatment plans. I am always available to help answer any questions that may come up when it comes to dental treatment and care.
Family is important to me. I love working at Isles Dental because it feels like a family. Everyone on our team is willing to be helpful and offer support in any way they can. I consider our patients part of our team, and I love getting to know them and their families. When I am out of the office, I spend as much time as I can outdoors. I like to relax and read, and I enjoy sharing time with my husband and our own family.
